Mid-South Soybean Board
SUMMARYOF PROJECT

Project Title: Effect of Planting Date, Latitude, and Environmental Factors on Choice of Maturity Group in Mid-South Soybean Production

Goal: To provide producers with a management tool that will allow them to determine how planting date for a maturity group 3, 4, 5, or 6 variety will affect yield, maturity and development, exposure to disease and pests, and seed quality over the entire MidSouth region, from latitudes of 30 to 36 degrees.

Description of Experiment:
Three years, beginning in spring 2012.
Four planting dates beginning as ‘early as possible for a location’ and extending until mid-June.
At each planting date, four varieties will be planted from each of the maturity groups 3, 4, 5, and 6.
Four replications of all treatments at each location.
Experiments at all locations will receive irrigation as needed.
Pesticides applied as needed.

Key Measurements:
Weekly determination of growth stages R1, R2, R5, R6, R7, and R8.
Weekly scouting of disease and insect incidence.
At maturity, yield, plant height, lodging, average seed weight.
Seed quality measurements including germination, accelerated aging, oil and protein concentration.
Environmental data at each location – maximum/minimum temperatures, solar radiation, rainfall, pan evaporation, daylength.

The Mid-South Soybean Board was created in 2009 by the soybean promotion boards in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to coordinate soybean research in the 4 state area.  The goals are to eliminate duplicate research spending and to develop and fund research of importance to our producers.

They are also developing this website to create an avenue to disseminate the research results to soybean producers.
THE MID-SOUTH SOYBEAN BOARD IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE FUNDING OF A 3 YEAR PROJECT FROM THE UNITED SOYBEAN BOARD.  THE PROJECT IS ENTITLED:  Effect of Planting Date, Latitude, and Environmental Factors on Choice of Maturity Group in Midsouth Soybean Production.   You may read more on the project here.
